Brookland Station; Accessible Entrance 10th and Newton

Commander Greene posted a message to the MPD 5D group earlier today, stating Brookland Robbery Suspect Captured!!.

According to Commander Greene

Last night, January 11, 2011, a female complainant was waiting for the bus in the 3500 block of 18th Street when she was approached by a black male suspect described a s 6-0 feet 120 pounds. The suspect gestured as if he had a gun and demanded her money. The victim screamed and ran into the street, Fifth District officers responded to the commotion and stopped the suspect who fled to the south alley of the 1600 block of Otis Street NE. He was positively identified and placed under arrest.

There have been a number of recent robberies targeting commuters including a number of robberies on Newton , including one at 6:30pm on Thursday January 6th at 6:30pm. There were also two robberies likely by the same perpetrator on Friday January 7th at 6:40pm near 14th Street and at 7:30pm near 10th Street.

Commander Greene also stated that a description of the perpetrator and the use of a silver handgun.

The two robberies on Newton were committed by the same person we believe and possibly the third as well, a black male described as 6 ft in height slim build in dark clothing armed with a silver handgun. Units have his description and are looking for the individual in the area. The individual appeared to head west after each offense was committed possibly toward the metro.

Based on the similarities to the Newton Market Homicide on December 12th, residents are asking if this is the same perpetrator that was involved in that botched robbery.

MPD 5D did a great job apprehending the suspect so quickly. Hopefully this arrest will end the recent robberies occurring the neighborhood.
