Friends of Fort Bunker Hill Park
Posted in Brookland on December 17th, 2009 by brookland – 2 CommentsFriends of Fort Bunker Hill Park is new organization that was created in 2009 to assist the National Park Service with the management and conservation of Brookland’s own Fort Bunker Hill Park located between 13th Street, 14th Street, Otis Street, and Perry Street.

Fort Bunker Hill was a former brick and earthenwork fortification built as part of the defenses as one of the circle forts of Washington DC during the civil war.

Fort Bunker Hill was built in the fall of 1861 by the 11th Massachusetts Infantry and was named after the Revolutionary fortification at Bunker Hill, Massachusetts. Originally, thirteen guns and mortars were mounted in the fort.
During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps worked on the park, planting trees, construction walkways and building a picnic ground and amphitheater. The amphitheater originally had space to entertain over 400 people. The picnic ground was located in the southwest corner and had 12 picnic tables with benches for those who wished to enjoy the outdoor eating facilities. By July of 1938, the National Park Service began a series of “Thursday after-sunset recreational programs” using the amphitheater as its primary location.
Friends of Fort Bunker Hill Park was founded by a concerned collection of neighbor who wished to increase the present and future enjoyment of this hidden game in Brookland by contributing to the renovation and upkeep of Fort Bunker Hill Park.
FOFBHP is looking towards educating the public about the park history and resources, fundraising, and special projects to include cleanup days among other activities. View FOFBHP’s website for more information and upcoming events and contact them via email to find out what you can do to help.
