Brookland Metro Station Gets Crime Camera(s)

Metro has announced that exterior cameras have been installed at 12 Metrorail stations in Washington DC and Fairfax County including Brookland, Rhode Island Ave , and Fort Totten among others, to help deter and prevent crime.

“We are concerned about improving the safety of our customers not only as they travel through our system, but also as they get to and from our stations. Having cameras monitoring the streets leading to our stations gives us extra eyes to see what’s going on in and around our system, and helps us make the Metro system safer for our riders and the communities we serve,” said Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn.

A total of 20 cameras have been installed, but its not apparent how many are installed at each station. On WMATA’s press release it states that DC has 17 cameras which DC paid $200,000 towards cameras in the city’s stations.

While this is a good step it will be seen if there are actually useful and deter crime.

The questions that I have are:

  1. How many camera’s are installed at the Brookland Station?
  2. Which side of the Brookland Metro station are they installed? CUA side , Brookland Side or Both?
  3. How long will the any footage be kept, will it be monitored proactively, or after a crime has been reported.
  4. Can these camera’s see in low light conditions? And how far is the view, can it see near the trees behind Brooks Mansion?

Question #2 is the biggest question, since it seems often the Brookland entrance to the metro station has repeatedly gotten the shaft over the last few years, The Brookland side still does not have a stairwell cover and it took the Pope’s visit for Metro to fix the escalator that was out of service for a significant amount of time.
