St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church

This Saturday May 19th is the Brooklands Kids Clothing Exchange at St. Anthony School Cafeteria (12th and Lawrence St.).

Clothing drop off is from 9am-10am, pickup hours is 10:30am-1pm, and from 12-1pm the exchange will be opened to the St. Anthony Church community.

The Brookland Kids Clothing Exchange will accept gently used clothing for children ages 0-10. Included in accepted items will be shoes, outerwear, swimwear, costumes, baby blankets, bibs, cloth diapers, etc.

More information about the exchange is below

Items that you should leave out of your donations include socks, undergarments, heavily soiled or worn items, etc. Also, we will only exchange clothes this time around. There may be opportunities to do an equipment/gear/toy exchange in the future if folks are interested.

As a way to thank St. Anthony Church & School for allowing us to use the space, we will be collecting books to donate to St. Anthony School. Please consider clearing off your book shelves and bringing a book donation.

Lastly, please bring a large trash bag with when you come to the exchange. This will help the volunteers to clear out the space when the exchange is over. Several charities are being considered for donation of any leftover items.

We are still in need of volunteers to assist with set-up, clean-up, and during the clothing exchange. Shifts are available! You may contact Anna at anna.zawislanski@ogilvy.com if you would like to sign up to volunteer.

Kenyan McDuffie one of the Ward 5 residents running in the special election for Harry Thomas Jr’s vacated seat is having a caravan tomorrow Saturday May 12th. The Caravan starts tomorrow at McDuffie Campaign HQ located at 3408 18th ST NE

The caravan ends out a Get Out The Vote Rally from 2-4pm at Rustik in Bloomingdale.

Great Brookland Yard Sale 2012

The 5th Annual Great Brookland Yard Sale is less than one day away.

There looks to not be a cloud in sight. The weather looks like it will be between 77-80 degrees tomorrow and will great weather for walking around to yard sales and meeting with neighbors. So the GBYS will be on schedule for tomorrow.

We have 76 yard sales signed up so far, including St Anthony Catholic School and Guildfield Bapist Church which will both have tables of goods to look over. There will be multiple food options around.

The yard sales will have printed maps, and there will be a welcome table at Greater Brookland Garden Club location at the Long and Foster office at 12th Newton.

As you shop the yard sales, be sure to check-in to Foursquare so we can see that you stopped by. Who knows you may even become Mayor of the GBYS

Yard Sales

The 5th Annual Great Brookland Yard Sale is just a couple of days away, this Saturday May 12th. The weather looks to be sunny 77 degrees with no rain in sight.

What better way to enjoy the fantastic weather then by going for a stroll through Brookland, meeting your friendly neighbors, and snagging some great deals.

The 2012 GBYS has over 75 participating yard sales with planting of shopping options throughout the Greater Brookland area.

Some key highlights of the GBYS are:

• St Anthony Catholic School Spring Market: 9:30AM-2:30PM
• Greater Brookland Garden Club: 12th and Newton Streets 10AM-4PM
• Guildfield Missionary Baptist Church: Market in Parking lot 8AM-4PM
• DC’s Different Drummers – a non-profit community band. an assortment of items – Computer table, electric lawn mower, household and office items, collectibles and old sheet music too.
• Brookland History Book Sale and Signing: 1pm – 3pm
• Seedlings, Plants, and Heirlooms
• Dance Place 3500 12th Street NE (12th and Monroe) 12pm – 5pm
• Vintage & Collectible Shop Clearance. Lots Of Treasures
• House Studio DC
• Excel Movement Studios
• Brookland Artspace Lofts, Group of multi disciplined artists displaying & selling their work.

And much, much more.

And in case you get hungry walking around and getting great deals, there will be a number of food options.

• PORC Food Truck will be parked at First Time Computers
• Guildfield Missionary Baptist Church: Home-Made Fried Fish, Fried Chicken, French Fries, Hot Dogs, Cheeseburgers, Sodas, Juices and Water, Fresh-Baked Cakes and Pies
• St Anthony Catholic School Spring Market
• Jamilyaa’s Gourment Tacos and Gourmet grilled Hot Dogs

Yard sale participants also shouldn’t worry if you didn’t get to sell everything, the Menkiti group will have a donation truck parked at First Time Computers from 1-330pm. Donations go to Goodwill and you will get a donation receipt.

Don’t forget to make home-made signs for your street corners, they are a great way to draw attention to your yard sale.

Franciscan Monastery

The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in Washington, DC, is sponsoring a photo contest through July 1.

One of the city’s most unusual and beautiful destinations, the monastery features an historic Byzantine-style church, cloister walk, replicas of Holy Land shrines and incredible gardens with over 1,200 roses.

Great Brookland Yard Sale 2012

The 2012 Great Brookland Yard Sale is fast approaching we are about a week away from Saturday May12th and have 50+ yard sales already signed up.

If you would like your yard sale added to the printed map, please send your yard sale information this weekend to brooklandcivic@yahoo.com to ensure that you are on the printed map. If you decide to add your yard sale later than that, no worries it will still get added to the GBYS google map but it won’t be on the printed map after Monday.

A couple of recent additions to the yard sale include :

• A donation truck which will be parked at First Time Computers from 1-3:30pm. People can drop off goodwill donations and get a donation receipt when they come.
• The PROC Food Truck will be at the GBYS. Either with the donation truck at First Time Computers or at St Anthony’s will located with the donation truck at First Time Computers located at 3101 12th Street NE, Washington, DC 20017.
• Chocolate City Beer is also working to have a food truck by the brewery like they do most Saturdays.

Menomalé the Pizza Napoletana and Craft Beer restaurant that has been building out it’s space in the last few months is having a soft opening today Thursday May 5th at 5pm. The Menomalé crew announced the soft opening today via Twitter and Facebook.

If you haven’t headed about Menomalé yet, their About page says it all.

Menomale, founded by an Italian born Maestro Pizzaiolo (master pizza maker) named Ettore Rusciano and a self proclaimed beer nerd named Leland Estes. The two share their years of experience in the culinary industry to bring a modern perspective on traditional cuisine.

Step inside Menomale and you are greeted by a hand built 6,000 lb wood-fired oven. This traditional centerpiece cooks a pizza at 900°, giving the pizza a unique flavor and texture. Featuring only ingredients from the Campania region of Italy we make pizza the way it was historically intended. Pair your pizza amongst 20 craft beers on draft and a growing bottle list curated from around the world. We proudly feature a variety of exquisite Italian wines in company with an array of simple spirits.

Menomalé has stirred great excitement and interest in Brookland since their announcement about opening Even though most neighborhood folks where in support of the new eatery and pub there was pushback for ANC 5B04 about the ABRA liquor license. That was resolved with a voluntary agreement when Menomalé agreed not to serve alcohol from 2PM-5PM on school days. Since this issue was resolved the Ettore and Leland have been going full steam to open their restaurant.

The Menomalé Menu looks fantastic and their twenty draft beers will make them a key destination in Brookland.

Remember the divisive National Organizational for Marriage’s mailings in 2010 supporting Delano Hunter’s campaign well here they are. These are scans of the mailers that I received in Brookland during the 2010 election cycle.

As it relates to their views . . . For instance, the mailer they sent out. [Read the text of the mailer here]. I didn’t get that in my mailbox. I didn’t see it until the next day. I don’t disagree with what the messaging was, but I may have done it differently. I wouldn’t have used certain terminology or certain words. It’s a relationship that I’m comfortable with. But I may not agree with them 100 percent.

Earlier this year Delano Hunter has changed his view and he no longer opposes the DC gay marriage law. This is in contrast to Kenyan Mcduffie who has not wavered in his support of marriage equality and was endorsed by the Gertrude Stein Club in the Ward 5 Council race
