ANC 5A 2010 Candidates

Posted in Brookland, Ward 5 on September 7th, 2010 by brookland – Be the first to comment

The September 3rd deadline for the filing as an ANC commissioner for 2010 has passed and the list of ANC 5A candidates is listed on the DC Board of Elections and Ethics site

The list hasn’t changed all that much as some SMD are such as 5A04, 5A05, 5A06, 5A08, and 5A09 are still uncontested and 5A11 does not have any candidates registered for the seat. However there are four races that will be interesting to watch.

ANC SMD 5A03 and 5A12 both have incumbents facing challengers to existing ANC commissioners Angel Alston and Bob King.

The races for ANC SMD 5A07 and 5A10 are heating up as two three way races.

First 5A10 has three new potential candidates as current 5A10 commissioner Phillip Blair is not running again this year. Instead folks in 5A10 get to chose between Jehan Ashley Carter, Corey Arnez Griffin, and Allen L. Tillman, Jr.

ANC SMD 5A07 will once again be race to watch as the candidates include current ANC 5A07 Carolyn Steptoe who was previously making a run at one of the At-Large council seats, John Daggett current Brookland Neighborhood Civic Association Vice President, and neighborhood activist Mary Melchior.

I am biased in watching the 5A07 race since it is not only my own ANC SMD but also will certainly being an interesting race will all the personalities involved.

Which ANC SMD election is everyone interested in? Which do you think will make a good race?

There wasn’t many surprises in the poll the biggest one being Michael Brown ( not the current At-Large member) beat out Phil Mendelson and Clark Way. Who says name recognition doesn’t matter?

Brookland / Edgewood Development Included in D.C. Neighborhood Investment Fund

Posted in Brookland, Development, Ward 5 on March 14th, 2010 by brookland – 2 Comments

The Washington Business Journal announced last week that the D.C. Neighborhood Investment Fund has been opened for proposals with a deadline of May 3rd 2010.

Development projects must be in one the 12 neighborhoods to quailify, this list includes both Brookland and Edgewood among others.

According to the WBJ:

Builders in a dozen D.C. neighborhoods are eligible to apply for up to $145,000 in pre-development grant money through the D.C. Neighborhood Investment Fund.

The fund, created as part of the agreement to build Nationals Park, has $5.2 million available this round to support development of either affordable housing projects of at least 10 units, facilities providing community benefits or mixed-use projects that propose some combination of housing, office space and community facilities.

…………….

Money can be used toward developers’ costs related to planning, environmental work, accounting, market studies, soil testing, legal services and other expenses.

With the D.C. Neighborhood Investment Fund being offered to new development in Brookland and Edgewood one wonders of which of the upcoming development will receive it:

  • ABDO/Catholic University South Campus Development
  • Colonel Brooks Development
  • Brookland Artspace Lofts
  • EYA’s Chancellor’s Row
  • Ronald McDonald House
  • Others?

Brookland: Snowapocalypse Photoset

Posted in Brookland, Images of Brookland, Photography, Ward 5 on December 22nd, 2009 by brookland – 1 Comment

Photoset of snow photographs from Brookland during this weekend’s east coast Snowapocalypse. Will walking around 12th Street most of the stores and restaurants including Colonel Brooks and CVS ( for a bit).

We were able get some yummy chicken fried chicken from Brookland Grill before it closed at 4pm on Saturday. Newton Street Market was open until 4pm as well. Also Wings to Go, Subway, and Pizza Boli were open both Saturday and Sunday.

By the time I finished the mini photo tour on Saturday it was cold and dark, but I was able to snap a few photo’s of winter wonderland that was Brookland.

Metro: Above-ground Stations Are Closed

Posted in Brookland, Transit, Ward 5 on December 19th, 2009 by brookland – Be the first to comment

Metro has announced that all above ground stations will close are closed because of the worsening snow conditions. Of course this includes all of the red line stations north of Union station including the Brookland station.

Metro has 86 stations and 106-miles of track. Forty-seven stations along 50.5 miles of track are located underground and 39 stations along 55.5 miles of track are above ground. All 39 above-ground stations will close at 1 p.m. The modified underground service will operate as follows:

  • Yellow Line – Service from Pentagon to Crystal City only
  • Red Line – Service between Medical Center and Union Station only
  • Orange Line – Service between Ballston and Stadium-Armory only
  • Green Line – Service between Fort Totten and Congress Heights only
  • Blue Line – Service between Ballston (extended to Blue Line) and Stadium-Armory only

Metro bus service is going to end at 1:30pm so getting around DC during the winter snow storm will take some effort. Taxi’s will be charging a #snOMG surcharge.

So bundle up and enjoy the snow.
